Day 2: The “Dreams Come Ture” Convention, Din Tai Fung, and the Typhoon

Yesterday was initially sunny like the day before, with a delightfully refreshing wind. If it weren’t for the lingering humidity, I would have thought we were in Michigan! Anyway, we made our way down to a cafe called Chuang’s to meet up with one of Lauren’s friend, Kathleen for some milk tea.

The milk tea was wonderful, MUCH better than the stuff we have in Ann Arbor (i.e. Bubble Island…). We all chatted with Kathleen in a mix of Chinese and English and had a lot of fun. Kathleen, it was really nice meeting you! Hopefully we can hang out again during this trip :D.

Afterwards, we walked over to a small area of old preserved houses. The houses appeared to have been changed into small cafes, though I’m not sure if anyone still lived in them. It was a peaceful walk close to the Taipei 101, despite the slowly graying sky and growing winds.

Oh, hi there!

Soon, it started raining on and off, and the wind turned unpleasantly harsh, so we decided to find shelter. This shelter turned out to be an anime/manga/comic/video game convention hilariously called “Dreams Come Ture” (yup, it was “Ture”). It was too irresistible, so we forked over our money and zoomed inside. I’m still not sure why we did LOL…

The interior was an otaku’s dream come true indeed. There were countless sections for countless manga and video games. Hell, there was even a huge section for Marvel and Star Wars!

We were completely dazzled by the sheer amount of stuff there…so many colors and so many people swarming around the merchandise and huge prints of famous manga/anime characters.

The funniest parts were the little stages that dotted the con, where girls dressed in cutesy outfits would dance idol-style to music. At one of them, there were a group of dudes who were yelling the lyrics to the music while doing the dance perfectly in sync with the girl onstage. Haters gonna hate, I guess LOL.

The guys’ backup dance moves complimented hers perfectly.

Overall, is was an insane experience. I never thought I would ever go to a con in Taiwan, much less one in the states…but I guess it was interesting/weird/insane.

We were pretty hungry after walking around for so long, so we decided to eat at the Taipei 101 branch of the world-famous Din Tai Fung (鼎泰豐). It was a half hour wait, but it was sooo worth it!

I can’t really describe how good it was…GO EAT IT YOURSELF! Anyway, when we were done eating, it was time to take a look at how these scrumptious dumpling-type foods were made.

The assembly line.

Most unfortunately, by the time we got out, the wind had become a giant gale. The dust literally stung as it hit our legs, and we were almost blown away!!! We had to hide behind a bus stop map until our bus arrived. To be honest though, the whole ordeal was pretty…awesome!!!!!

We were all pretty tired by the time we got back home, so it was time for a game of LOL and an episode of Cutthroat Kitchen. Somewhere along the way, I conked out until dinnertime.

As I type the next morning, the wind is howling like a ghost outside, there are pots and debris from other buildings strewn all over the back garden, and a tree has fallen over in the front. I think we may still go out though…O_O
